EMDR Therapy for Women of Color: You Don't Have to Carry It All
Let’s be real—being a woman of color in this world is a lot.
You're expected to be strong, hold it all together, push through, stay “grateful,” and keep showing up for everyone else. But what happens to all the things you don’t say out loud? The old memories that still sting? The moments that left you feeling small, unseen, or unsafe?
That’s where EMDR therapy can come in. It’s not a magic fix, but it is a powerful tool for healing deep emotional wounds—especially the ones you’ve been carrying for years.
So… what is EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing—yes, it's a mouthful. But at its core, EMDR is a therapy that helps your brain unstick from painful memories, beliefs, and emotions.
Instead of just talking things through, EMDR works with how your brain naturally processes stress. We use simple things like eye movements or tapping while gently revisiting old memories or emotions. Over time, those memories lose their charge. You don’t forget them, but they stop running the show.
Why it’s powerful for women of color
Most of the women I work with aren’t coming in with just “one” trauma. There’s layers—family stuff, cultural expectations, relationship wounds, microaggressions, generational trauma, burnout, anxiety... You name it.
What I love about EMDR is that it doesn’t ask you to “be strong” or explain everything in perfect words. It allows you to heal on a deeper level—without needing to retell your pain over and over.
You don’t have to perform strength here. You get to be human.
What it’s like in session
We start slow. You get to know me, I get to know you, and we make sure you feel safe and supported. Before we go anywhere near trauma, we build up your inner tools—grounding, breathing, emotional safety. This is your space, and you always get to decide the pace.
When you’re ready, we gently explore what’s stuck—maybe it’s that one moment you still replay at night. Maybe it’s a belief like, “I’m not enough,” or “I have to do everything myself.”
And then... we work through it. Not by rehashing every detail, but by letting your brain reprocess it—so you can move forward without carrying the same weight.
Real talk: EMDR can help with…
Feeling constantly “on edge” or burnt out
Old memories that still feel raw
Deep-rooted anxiety or self-doubt
Stress from being “the strong one” all the time
Healing from painful relationships or childhood wounds
Racial trauma and invisible emotional labor
You deserve to feel safe in your body. In your story. In your life.
If no one’s told you this yet: you don’t have to keep carrying it all.
Healing doesn’t mean forgetting. It doesn’t mean pretending everything’s okay. It means giving yourself permission to process things at your own pace, in your own way—with support that actually gets it.
At Shades of Healing Therapy, EMDR is one of the ways we help women of color gently let go of what’s been holding them back—and finally start to feel free.
Let’s talk.
If you're curious about EMDR but a little nervous—that’s okay. I offer a free 15-minute consultation so you can ask questions, feel it out, and see if it’s a good fit.
You don’t need to be in crisis to deserve help. You just need to be ready to start putting you first.
You’re not broken. You’re not too much. You’re not alone.
Let’s do this together.
