Trauma Therapy in Culver City, CA | Black Female Therapists

Shades of Healing provides trauma therapy and EMDR therapy for high-achieving women of color in Culver City and the surrounding communities of Inglewood, Mar Vista, Palms, Baldwin Hills, Ladera Heights, and View Park. Women working at Sony Pictures Studios, Amazon Studios, or Kaiser Permanente Culver City, and those connected to the Culver City Arts District and Downtown Culver City, navigate environments of high demand and high visibility. This practice was built for women who are performing at the top of their fields and ready to attend to what is happening beneath.

Culver City has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, becoming a hub for entertainment, technology, and creative industry. The Culver Steps, the Arts District, and the influx of major studios and tech companies have changed the city's character and intensified its professional culture. For women of color in Culver City, particularly in Baldwin Hills, Ladera Heights, and View Park, where Black professional communities have deep roots, there is a specific experience of navigating these industries as both insiders and outsiders, achieving at a high level in environments that have not always been designed for their inclusion.

The work builds toward something lasting: a nervous system that can rest, a self that is not organized entirely around production and approval, and relationships that offer genuine reciprocity. For women in Culver City's demanding professional environments, this kind of internal stability is both a personal achievement and a professional resource.

How it Works

Step 1

The entertainment and tech corridors of Culver City value performance, creativity, and constant output. This practice values something different: honesty, depth, and the slow, serious work of integration. The trauma-informed, attachment-focused approach does not move quickly past what is difficult. It stays with it, examining the roots of current patterns with clinical precision and cultural attunement. The difference between this approach and what many clients have experienced before is the specificity of the fit.

Step 2

The first step is a free consultation, an opportunity to share what you are carrying and get a genuine sense of whether this practice is the right space to bring it. There is no obligation after that conversation, and no expectation of performing certainty about what you need. Beginning is a simple step, and making that step easy is intentional.

Step 3

The work builds toward something lasting: a nervous system that can rest, a self that is not organized entirely around production and approval, and relationships that offer genuine reciprocity. For women in Culver City's demanding professional environments, this kind of internal stability is both a personal achievement and a professional resource.

Culver City's entertainment and tech environments are environments of significant power dynamics, and the trauma that occurs within those dynamics is real and clinically significant. Trauma therapy at Shades of Healing addresses the full spectrum of traumatic experience, including workplace harm, racial stress, relational wounding, and early attachment injuries, within a framework that treats cultural context as clinically central. The work is evidence-based, rigorously paced, and oriented toward the kind of integration that produces lasting change.

EMDR's bilateral stimulation engages the brain's natural processing capacity, allowing fragmented, stuck experiences to be integrated rather than continuously re-activated. For women in Culver City's high-performance environments who have learned to push through difficulty rather than process it, EMDR provides a structured pathway to a different kind of relief. The protocol is collaborative and carefully paced, with the client guiding the depth and speed of the work. Many clients experience meaningful shifts in a shorter timeframe than they expect.

Childhood Trauma

In households shaped by high aspiration, the emotional costs of achievement-oriented parenting are often invisible. Children in these households learned to be impressive before they learned to be known, and the gap between those two things becomes the terrain of adult therapy. Childhood trauma therapy examines the early relational environment with clinical care, honoring what it provided while attending to what it cost, and building new internal structures that support genuine self-regard rather than performed sufficiency.

In the creative industries centered in Culver City, relational harm is frequently wrapped in the language of collaboration and professional expectation. The betrayals that occur in these environments, including boundary violations, exploitation, and the chronic experience of having contributions minimized, are real forms of relational trauma. Relational trauma therapy provides a space to name and process that harm alongside more explicitly personal relational injuries, creating a fuller picture of what the client has been responding to and building new capacities for protection and connection.

The Black communities with deep roots in Baldwin Hills, Ladera Heights, and View Park carry a particular generational history: one of deliberate community-building, professional achievement, and the ongoing navigation of systemic racism in institutions and industries. Generational trauma therapy honors that history while attending to the specific ways it has been carried in individual bodies, families, and relational patterns. For women whose sense of self is bound up in a larger communal inheritance, this work provides a way to examine that inheritance with both pride and honesty.

Post-traumatic stress in the creative industries often presents as the relentless drive to stay relevant, the hypervigilance of a professional environment where failure is very public, and the chronic emotional exhaustion of performing competence under sustained pressure. CPTSD from earlier experiences is frequently what makes those environments feel so charged. Treatment in this practice is specific, evidence-based, and paced carefully to support genuine movement toward regulation without destabilizing the professional functioning that clients depend on.

Attachment patterns shape not just romantic relationships but every domain in which closeness, dependence, or vulnerability is at stake, including professional mentorship, creative collaboration, and friendship. For women in Culver City who find that the relational dynamics of their professional lives feel as charged and confusing as those of their personal lives, attachment therapy often provides a unifying framework. Understanding the attachment system helps make sense of patterns that have felt mysterious, and creating new possibilities within the therapeutic relationship makes those patterns genuinely changeable.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What type of therapy is best for trauma?

The best type of therapy depends on your unique experiences and goals. At Shades of Healing, we use trauma-informed approaches including EMDR and inner child work to help you understand the emotional patterns connected to past experiences and create meaningful, lasting change. Together, we'll determine the approach that best supports your healing journey.

  • How do I know if I need trauma therapy?

Trauma therapy may be helpful if you find yourself stuck in recurring patterns such as people pleasing, overthinking, difficulty setting boundaries, chronic guilt, self-doubt, or feeling responsible for everyone else's needs. You don't need to have experienced a single major event to benefit from trauma therapy. Many people discover that past experiences are still influencing how they relate to themselves and others today.

  • How long does trauma therapy take?

Healing looks different for everyone. The length of therapy depends on your goals, experiences, and the areas you'd like to work on. Some clients find relief within a few months, while others choose to continue therapy for deeper healing and ongoing personal growth.

  • What happens in a trauma therapy session?

Trauma therapy is a collaborative process. Sessions may include exploring relationship patterns, processing past experiences, developing coping tools, strengthening self-awareness, and working through emotional wounds using approaches such as EMDR and inner child work. Our work together is always tailored to your individual needs and goals.

  • Can I use my insurance for virtual therapy?

I currently do not accept insurance. I'm out-of-network with insurance providers and can provide a superbill that you may submit for possible reimbursement.

I recommend contacting your insurance company directly to learn more about your out-of-network benefits.

  • What if I need to cancel or reschedule a session?

I understand that life happens. If you need to cancel or reschedule, please provide at least 24 hours notice whenever possible.

Appointments canceled or rescheduled with less than the required notice may be subject to a cancellation fee.

Please contact me as soon as possible if you need to make changes to your appointment.
