Trauma Therapy in Pasadena, CA | Black Female Therapists

Shades of Healing offers trauma therapy and EMDR therapy for high-achieving women of color in Pasadena and the surrounding communities of Arcadia, Monrovia, San Marino, Altadena, Temple City, and Alhambra. Women connected to Huntington Hospital, Caltech, Pasadena City College, and the research institutions of JPL navigate demanding professional environments alongside the cultural and relational pressures that rarely appear on a CV. This practice was designed for women who are carrying precisely that combination.

Pasadena is a city with a particular civic pride rooted in intellectual achievement, cultural institutions, and the legacy of the Rose Bowl and Old Pasadena's commercial corridor. It is also a city with deep racial history and ongoing complexity around belonging for communities of color. Women of color in Pasadena often navigate professional environments at some of the nation's premier research and healthcare institutions while also holding the weight of being visible minorities in spaces that are not always welcoming. The Huntington Library and Gardens may be beautiful on a Sunday, but the Monday morning meeting often holds something else entirely.

The work builds steadily toward integration: a nervous system that can rest, a sense of self that does not depend entirely on being useful or excellent, and relationships that are more genuine and less performed. Women who engage deeply with this process often describe it as the most substantive investment they have made in themselves.

How it Works

Step 1

In Pasadena's intellectually rigorous environment, it matters that the clinical approach can meet clients where they are, analytically capable and often emotionally guarded. This practice uses a trauma-informed, attachment-focused framework that engages both intellectual understanding and embodied experience, working with the nervous system's intelligence rather than against it. The approach is specific, evidence-based, and adapted to the lives of high-achieving women.

Step 2

The entry point is a free consultation, a genuinely low-pressure conversation to discuss what is bringing you to therapy, ask questions about the approach, and get a felt sense of fit. There is no obligation after that conversation, and no expectation that you arrive with a clear diagnosis of your own needs. Arriving uncertain is entirely workable.

Step 3

The work builds steadily toward integration: a nervous system that can rest, a sense of self that does not depend entirely on being useful or excellent, and relationships that are more genuine and less performed. Women who engage deeply with this process often describe it as the most substantive investment they have made in themselves.

In an intellectually driven community like Pasadena, where institutions like Caltech and JPL set the cultural tone of analytical rigor, trauma is often approached as a problem to be solved through understanding. But the nervous system does not heal through insight alone. Trauma therapy at Shades of Healing combines the intellectual frameworks clients in this community appreciate with the body-based, relational work that actually produces change. The approach addresses the full spectrum of traumatic experience and works toward genuine nervous system resolution, not just cognitive reframing.

EMDR is one of the most thoroughly researched trauma therapies available, and it is particularly well-suited to clients who are intellectually oriented but find that understanding alone has not produced the emotional freedom they are seeking. The bilateral stimulation at the heart of EMDR engages the brain's processing system in a way that bypasses the analytical filter, allowing memories and their associated emotional charge to be integrated at a deeper level. For women in Pasadena who have read the books and understand the theory and still feel stuck, EMDR often provides the access point that has been missing.

Childhood Trauma

In households shaped by high achievement, emotional neglect can be invisible. The home that provided material security and educational opportunity may have provided very little emotional attunement, leaving children who were objectively privileged and internally quite alone. Childhood trauma therapy in this practice holds that complexity without minimizing it. The wounds of emotional unavailability and conditional love are real, and they produce real patterns in adulthood. This work examines those patterns with clinical care and creates pathways toward something more nourishing.

Relational trauma encompasses the full range of harm that occurs within relationships: early attachment injuries, adult betrayals, chronic emotional neglect, and the subtler wounds of environments that consistently failed to see a person clearly. For women of color in Pasadena's predominantly white academic and professional institutions, relational trauma is often embedded in the texture of professional life, in the microaggressions, the exclusions, and the invisible labor of being excellent in spaces not designed for them. This therapy addresses all of it.

Many of the women drawn to this practice in Pasadena are the daughters and granddaughters of people who sacrificed a great deal so that they could have access to institutions like Caltech, Huntington Hospital, or PCC. That inheritance is meaningful and also complex. Generational trauma therapy creates space to hold both the gratitude and the weight, to examine what has been passed down through family systems, and to make intentional choices about the patterns that will be carried forward. This work often produces a profound sense of both freedom and connection.

In high-achieving professional environments, PTSD and CPTSD often go unrecognized because the symptoms have been pressed into the service of function. A relentless work ethic, difficulty trusting others, chronic self-doubt, and an inability to feel genuinely settled can all be expressions of post-traumatic stress in women who have organized their lives around performance. Treatment is specific and evidence-based, working directly with the patterns the nervous system has formed and creating space for a fundamentally different relationship with safety and the present moment.

Attachment patterns operate like an invisible operating system, running in the background of every relationship and shaping what a person expects, fears, and reaches for in moments of vulnerability. For highly capable women who find that relationships continue to feel confusing or disappointing despite significant personal growth, attachment therapy offers a framework that makes sense of the pattern and a process for genuinely changing it. The work is both analytical and experiential, engaging the mind and the nervous system together.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What type of therapy is best for trauma?

The best type of therapy depends on your unique experiences and goals. At Shades of Healing, we use trauma-informed approaches including EMDR and inner child work to help you understand the emotional patterns connected to past experiences and create meaningful, lasting change. Together, we'll determine the approach that best supports your healing journey.

  • How do I know if I need trauma therapy?

Trauma therapy may be helpful if you find yourself stuck in recurring patterns such as people pleasing, overthinking, difficulty setting boundaries, chronic guilt, self-doubt, or feeling responsible for everyone else's needs. You don't need to have experienced a single major event to benefit from trauma therapy. Many people discover that past experiences are still influencing how they relate to themselves and others today.

  • How long does trauma therapy take?

Healing looks different for everyone. The length of therapy depends on your goals, experiences, and the areas you'd like to work on. Some clients find relief within a few months, while others choose to continue therapy for deeper healing and ongoing personal growth.

  • What happens in a trauma therapy session?

Trauma therapy is a collaborative process. Sessions may include exploring relationship patterns, processing past experiences, developing coping tools, strengthening self-awareness, and working through emotional wounds using approaches such as EMDR and inner child work. Our work together is always tailored to your individual needs and goals.

  • Can I use my insurance for virtual therapy?

I currently do not accept insurance. I'm out-of-network with insurance providers and can provide a superbill that you may submit for possible reimbursement.
