Trauma Therapy in Sherman Oaks, CA | Black Female Therapists

Shades of Healing offers trauma therapy and EMDR therapy for high-achieving women of color in Sherman Oaks and the surrounding communities of Van Nuys, Encino, Studio City, Valley Village, and Panorama City. Women navigating the Ventura Boulevard corridor, working near the Galleria at Sherman Oaks or Fashion Square mall, or commuting over the Sepulveda Pass between the Valley and the Westside know something about the friction of a life stretched across multiple worlds. This practice serves women who are managing a great deal and ready to be cared for.

Sherman Oaks occupies a particular position in the San Fernando Valley's geography and social fabric: suburban enough to feel settled, urban enough to feel demanding, and positioned between worlds in a way that mirrors the experience of many women who live here. The Ventura Boulevard corridor pulses with professional energy, and Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Park offers the appearance of respite. But the women in this community often carry quiet complexity beneath efficient exteriors. They are the caregivers, the professionals, the ones who make it work, and they rarely prioritize themselves in that list.

The direction of this work is toward integration: a more regulated emotional life, a clearer sense of what you actually want and need, and relationships that feel more genuinely mutual. Women who engage seriously with this process often describe a change that is felt at the level of how they inhabit their own lives, not just how they manage their days.

How it Works

Step 1

The Sherman Oaks area's blend of family life, professional ambition, and cultural diversity creates a particular kind of complexity for the women living in it. This practice holds that complexity with clinical care. The trauma-informed, attachment-focused approach does not reduce clients to their symptoms or their demographics. It attends to the whole person, including the relational history and nervous system experience that shaped who she is today.

Step 2

Getting started begins with a free consultation, a conversation where you share what is bringing you to therapy and get a genuine sense of whether this practice is the right fit. The schedule is designed to accommodate busy lives, and the process of beginning is intentionally simple. You do not need to have your experience organized or articulated perfectly before reaching out.

Step 3

The direction of this work is toward integration: a more regulated emotional life, a clearer sense of what you actually want and need, and relationships that feel more genuinely mutual. Women who engage seriously with this process often describe a change that is felt at the level of how they inhabit their own lives, not just how they manage their days.

Trauma therapy in this practice addresses the full arc of traumatic experience, from the acute incidents that leave a clear before-and-after, to the slower accumulation of stress, relational harm, and systemic pressure that does not always have a name. For women in Sherman Oaks navigating layered professional and family demands, the latter is often more present than the former, and it is no less impactful on the nervous system. This work creates a specific, boundaried space for examining what the system has been holding and building genuine pathways toward regulation and integration.

EMDR works by targeting the specific memories and emotional associations that are driving current reactivity, helping the brain complete the processing it could not finish during an overwhelming experience. The approach is particularly effective for clients who are capable of verbal insight but find that insight alone does not change how they feel or react in triggering situations. For women in Sherman Oaks who are self-aware and still stuck, EMDR often provides access to the level of the nervous system where the stuckness lives.

Childhood Trauma

The strategies developed in childhood to manage an emotionally unreliable environment are remarkably durable. They persist into adulthood as patterns of self-protection, self-criticism, compulsive helping, emotional avoidance, or relentless achievement, long after the original environment is gone. Childhood trauma therapy in this practice examines those strategies with genuine curiosity and without judgment, understanding them as the intelligent adaptations they were before working to create something more spacious and self-sustaining in their place.

Relational wounds often live in the body as a constant, low-grade alertness: a scanning of social environments for threat, a difficulty trusting intentions, a tendency to give before being asked and resent what was given. For women in Sherman Oaks who have been navigating complex family systems, demanding professional relationships, or partnerships that have required too much self-abandonment, relational trauma therapy provides a framework for understanding those patterns and a process for changing them.

The San Fernando Valley is home to communities that carry rich and complex generational histories. For many women in Sherman Oaks and the surrounding neighborhoods, the emotional rules of the household, what was allowed to be felt, said, or wanted, reflect inheritances shaped by immigration, displacement, or survival under conditions that required emotional suppression. Generational trauma therapy creates space to examine those rules, to honor what they protected, and to release what they have cost.

PTSD and CPTSD in high-achieving women frequently go unrecognized because they are folded into what looks like a productive, organized life. Chronic vigilance becomes thoroughness. Emotional numbness becomes professionalism. Difficulty with trust becomes independence. Treatment in this practice is specific and evidence-based, working to help the nervous system move from a chronic state of alert into genuine presence, and to build the capacity for safety that trauma disrupted.

Attachment patterns are the invisible architecture of intimate relationships. They determine how closeness is sought and feared, how conflict is managed, and what a person believes she must be in order to deserve connection. For high-achieving women in Sherman Oaks who find that professional success has not translated into relational ease, attachment therapy offers a framework and a process for genuine change. The work is both exploratory and corrective, using the therapeutic relationship as a model for new relational possibilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What type of therapy is best for trauma?

The best type of therapy depends on your unique experiences and goals. At Shades of Healing, we use trauma-informed approaches including EMDR and inner child work to help you understand the emotional patterns connected to past experiences and create meaningful, lasting change. Together, we'll determine the approach that best supports your healing journey.

  • How do I know if I need trauma therapy?

Trauma therapy may be helpful if you find yourself stuck in recurring patterns such as people pleasing, overthinking, difficulty setting boundaries, chronic guilt, self-doubt, or feeling responsible for everyone else's needs. You don't need to have experienced a single major event to benefit from trauma therapy. Many people discover that past experiences are still influencing how they relate to themselves and others today.

  • How long does trauma therapy take?

Healing looks different for everyone. The length of therapy depends on your goals, experiences, and the areas you'd like to work on. Some clients find relief within a few months, while others choose to continue therapy for deeper healing and ongoing personal growth.

  • What happens in a trauma therapy session?

Trauma therapy is a collaborative process. Sessions may include exploring relationship patterns, processing past experiences, developing coping tools, strengthening self-awareness, and working through emotional wounds using approaches such as EMDR and inner child work. Our work together is always tailored to your individual needs and goals.

  • Can I use my insurance for virtual therapy?

I currently do not accept insurance. I'm out-of-network with insurance providers and can provide a superbill that you may submit for possible reimbursement.

I recommend contacting your insurance company directly to learn more about your out-of-network benefits.

  • What if I need to cancel or reschedule a session?

I understand that life happens. If you need to cancel or reschedule, please provide at least 24 hours notice whenever possible.

Appointments canceled or rescheduled with less than the required notice may be subject to a cancellation fee.

Please contact me as soon as possible if you need to make changes to your appointment.
