Trauma Therapy in Woodland Hills, CA | Black Female Therapists

Shades of Healing offers trauma therapy and EMDR therapy for high-achieving women of color in Woodland Hills and the surrounding communities of Tarzana, Calabasas, West Hills, Canoga Park, and Chatsworth. Women connected to Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills, Westfield Topanga mall, Pierce College, and Warner Center navigate a corner of the San Fernando Valley that is simultaneously suburban and professionally demanding. This practice serves women who have built impressive lives and are ready to build an equally solid inner foundation.

Woodland Hills sits at the western edge of the Valley, where the 101 freeway corridor creates both connectivity and the particular exhaustion of commuting between worlds. It is a community where professional achievement and family life are expected to coexist seamlessly, and women here often carry both without adequate support for either. The proximity to Calabasas adds a layer of aspirational pressure, while the quieter residential streets of Woodland Hills itself project a calm that many of its women know is only part of the picture.

What this work builds toward is a life that feels less like performance and more like inhabitation. Women who engage seriously with this process describe a lasting shift in how they relate to their own emotions, how they set limits in relationships, and how they experience themselves when no one is watching. The change is private and cumulative and real.

How it Works

Step 1

This practice does not begin with symptoms and work backward. It begins with the whole person: her history, her relational patterns, her nervous system's particular way of managing threat and safety. The trauma-informed, attachment-focused framework provides a structure for understanding not just what is happening but what shaped it and what the nervous system needs in order to move. This is clinical work at its most specific and most relational.

Step 2

Beginning starts with a free consultation, a genuine opportunity to discuss what is bringing you to therapy and to determine whether this approach feels like the right fit. Many women in Woodland Hills come in having managed on their own for a long time. The consultation is an opportunity to find out what it feels like to be genuinely supported.

Step 3

What this work builds toward is a life that feels less like performance and more like inhabitation. Women who engage seriously with this process describe a lasting shift in how they relate to their own emotions, how they set limits in relationships, and how they experience themselves when no one is watching. The change is private and cumulative and real.

Trauma therapy addresses the impact that overwhelming experience has on the nervous system, the emotional life, and the patterns of relationship that form in its wake. In Woodland Hills, where professional achievement and family responsibility are both high priorities, the symptoms of unprocessed trauma often go unaddressed for years, organized into a busy life as chronic anxiety, exhaustion, or relational difficulty. This practice creates a specific space for attending to those symptoms at their source, with clinical care that is both rigorous and culturally responsive.

EMDR is one of the most effective and well-researched therapies available for the treatment of post-traumatic stress and related conditions. It works by engaging the brain's bilateral processing capacity to help stuck memories and their associated emotional charge move through the system. For clients in Woodland Hills who have been carrying the same emotional burdens through multiple life transitions, EMDR often provides access to a level of processing that talk therapy alone has not reached. The protocol is structured and collaborative, and many clients experience meaningful shifts within a relatively short course of treatment.

Childhood Trauma

Childhood trauma in high-achieving families often looks different than the images popular culture provides. It is not always dramatic. It is often the mother who was too overwhelmed to be emotionally present, the father whose approval was always conditional, or the household where children were seen but not truly known. Childhood trauma therapy attends to those quieter wounds with clinical specificity, examining the beliefs they produced and the strategies they required, and creating room for something more nourishing in their place.

Relational trauma accumulates in the space between what was needed and what was received. For many women in Woodland Hills navigating demanding marriages, complex co-parenting relationships, or professional dynamics that require constant emotional labor, that accumulation is significant. Relational trauma therapy creates space to examine the full landscape of relational wounding without minimizing any of it, and to build new capacities for connection that do not require self-erasure as the price of belonging.

The families that produce high-achieving women often have complex emotional inheritance at their center: the strength and the silence, the sacrifice and the suppression, the deep love and the unspoken pain. Generational trauma therapy makes the implicit explicit, helping women understand the emotional rules they inherited and the survival strategies that were passed down through family lines. For women in Woodland Hills who sense that what they are carrying belongs not only to them, this work provides both clarity and genuine relief.

PTSD and CPTSD in women who are managing demanding professional and family lives often present less dramatically than clinical descriptions suggest. Instead of acute crisis, there is a persistent low-level vigilance, difficulty resting fully, a chronic sense of not being quite safe, and deep fatigue that sleep does not resolve. These are not character flaws or signs of weakness. They are the nervous system's response to experiences that exceeded its capacity. Treatment is specific and evidence-based, oriented toward genuine regulation rather than better management.

Early attachment experiences become the operating system of adult intimacy. They shape what closeness feels like, how conflict is managed, and what a person believes she must be in order to deserve care. For women in Woodland Hills who have built successful lives while quietly struggling with the feeling that they are fundamentally alone or fundamentally too much, attachment therapy reaches the source of that experience. The work is both analytically engaging and emotionally alive, creating genuine movement in patterns that have persisted across relationships and years.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What type of therapy is best for trauma?

The best type of therapy depends on your unique experiences and goals. At Shades of Healing, we use trauma-informed approaches including EMDR and inner child work to help you understand the emotional patterns connected to past experiences and create meaningful, lasting change. Together, we'll determine the approach that best supports your healing journey.

  • How do I know if I need trauma therapy?

Trauma therapy may be helpful if you find yourself stuck in recurring patterns such as people pleasing, overthinking, difficulty setting boundaries, chronic guilt, self-doubt, or feeling responsible for everyone else's needs. You don't need to have experienced a single major event to benefit from trauma therapy. Many people discover that past experiences are still influencing how they relate to themselves and others today.

  • How long does trauma therapy take?

Healing looks different for everyone. The length of therapy depends on your goals, experiences, and the areas you'd like to work on. Some clients find relief within a few months, while others choose to continue therapy for deeper healing and ongoing personal growth.

  • What happens in a trauma therapy session?

Trauma therapy is a collaborative process. Sessions may include exploring relationship patterns, processing past experiences, developing coping tools, strengthening self-awareness, and working through emotional wounds using approaches such as EMDR and inner child work. Our work together is always tailored to your individual needs and goals.

  • Can I use my insurance for virtual therapy?

I currently do not accept insurance. I'm out-of-network with insurance providers and can provide a superbill that you may submit for possible reimbursement.

I recommend contacting your insurance company directly to learn more about your out-of-network benefits.

  • What if I need to cancel or reschedule a session?

I understand that life happens. If you need to cancel or reschedule, please provide at least 24 hours notice whenever possible.

Appointments canceled or rescheduled with less than the required notice may be subject to a cancellation fee.

Please contact me as soon as possible if you need to make changes to your appointment.
